7 SOLOS, is a recital on film with music spaning seven centuries from the early medieval period to our modern day. All music in the film is performed with no overdubbing by Wayne Hankin playing a parlay of unusual instruments in the following order:
I. hornpipe II. 4-hole clay flute III. hümmelchen IV. baroque alto recorder V. trump VI. double pipes VII. bone flute
Filmed on location in Vermont, each solo reflects an unusual aspect of the stateʼs landscape consisting of upside down trees, fall forests, historical performance halls, ancient churches, abandoned factories, frozen quarries and a frozen puppet barn.
Synopsis: 7 Solos documents the musical journey of a musician in search - like all artists - not only his audience, but his place in the world. The audience watches his travels by way of a tourist telescope as the musicians wanders over several landscapes and changes of seasons. With each solo, the musician adopts a character suited to the environment - lost shepherd, Maxfield Parrish minstrel, country gentleman, mystic priest, unemployed laborer and finally a hooded creature. As he reaches his final destination, the final piece is played and his true identity revealed.
7 Solos combines the forms of musical and silent film. With no dialogue, the film can be seen and understood by audiences world wide. Most of all, 7 Solos is a film which reinvents the ancient classical recital, bringing it up to date for people of all ages to enjoy.
